Tour Details: Dog Sledding in Sweden

If you are looking for a holiday to experience dog sledding in Sweden and the chance to see the Northern Lights, look no further than our Aurora Husky Tour. Whilst no tour can guarantee you seeing the Northern Lights, this tour will give you a better chance than most! This dog sledding in Sweden trip takes place in mid-winter when dark mornings and evenings give you a clearer night sky with great visibility conditions. You will travel in the Swedish Lapland where the further north you go the better it is to view the northern lights. And finally the tour is in an area renown for clear skies – hence a space station and specialist northern lights viewing facilities are based here – as the area is protected by Norwegian and Finnish mountains which tend to block out the lower clouds.

We do however recommend you select the husky sledding adventure that you prefer and take any sightings of the Northern Lights as a bonus!

Dates: Dog sledding in Sweden’s Aurora Husky Tour starts on a various dates through the season on set departures (Feb – April). Please contact us with your preferred dates for availability at info@huskyholidays.co.uk

What to Expect

During this dog sledding in Sweden itinerary, there are plenty of wonderful opportunities to see the Aurora during the dark polar nights, see the glittering snow, breathe pure air and a silence so intense you can almost hear it!  Overnights are in simple but comfortable cabins.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Sweden

Arrival at Kiruna airport for the start of your dog sledding in Sweden. Your guide will meet you at the airport and accompany you to the kennels base camp or the main wilderness camp. Here you will meet the dogs and become acquainted with the camp and its surroundings. Dinner and perhaps a sauna if it is not too late.

Day 2

We start the day by watering the dogs, after which we will eat breakfast. After breakfast we will learn the basics on how to handle the dogs, sleds and harnesses. We will then pack the sleds for the coming days, then we will set off on tour. Each participant will drive his or her own sled with a team of four dogs, following the guide who will lead the way. On arrival at camp, we will work together to prepare both the dogs and ourselves for the night. This will include feeding of the dogs, chopping wood and fetching water. We end the day with dinner and a sauna.

Day 3

We start the day by watering the dogs, after which we will eat breakfast. We will then pack the sleds with all the necessary items for the coming days. As soon as the preparations are ready, we will set off on the dog sledding in Sweden tour. We will drive between 25 and 50 kilometres per day, and sleep in simple huts along the route. This is a true dog sledding adventure where we head deep into the Swedish wilderness.

Day 4

The morning routines are the same every day. The rest of the day is characterised by the route chosen. Our tour takes us through Europe’s last remaining wilderness, where we will (weather permitting) experience the Northern Lights in the dark polar night, glittering white snow during the day, pure air, and a silence so intense you can almost hear it.

Day 5

The landscape will vary considerably depending on the route we choose to take. The routes will lead us along rivers, through thick forests and mountain ranges, and across lakes.

Day 6

In the event of bad weather an alternative day itinerary may be included. The day could be spent, for instance, sightseeing in Kiruna or visiting the Ice Hotel (cost around £48 paid locally).

Day 7

All overnights are in cabins along the trails, the guide will choose where we stay depending on weather conditions and client ability. Today we will take the trails back to the husky farm.

Once we arrive back, enjoy dinner, relax and share stories and photos of your dog sledding in Sweden.

Day 8

After breakfast, you will be taken back to the airport or railway station for your homeward departure.

Trip Notes

General

This is a preliminary itinerary. The length and route of the tour may vary depending on circumstances beyond our control such as weather, trail access, and seasonal variations. We try to stay overnight in 3-4 different cabins during the week, depending on weather conditions. Our dog sledding in Sweden tours will be done in the area around Kiruna up to 100km in radius. Some huts are very simple with bunk beds and shared sleeping accommodation.
